Duck Hunting with grandpa is a field trip who's theme is based on the book "Duck Hunting With Grandpa", by Helen Hunter, a Cedar Rapids resident. The book enables youngsters to discover and experience the sport of duck hunting through the experiences of and conversations between an 11-year-old boy and his grandpa. The trip stated with a short bus ride to the Port Louisa National wildlife refuge where the kids were able to see all kinds of wildlife like, bald eagles, wild turkeys, and many waterfowl. The kids then looked at the water inlet tubes and learned a little about management of the lake. They are then taken to Shaffer Access where they learn about the controlled hunting area and partake in a mock blind drawing. The
afternoon sessions started about noon at Sand Run at Lake Odessa. Jeff Hammond (local duck hunter) and Greg Schmitt (Iowa DNR employee & hunter) teaching the kids about the importance of decoys and placement
