This is it, the last of the duck hunting in Iowa till next September. The season always goes so fast, but this year I've got next to no memories except for my hunts out of state. I sure hope these last two weekend days work for all who get out. I've got 3 spots in mind tomorrow and I'm going down the list till I find one that isn't frozen. Keep your heads low and watch out for the slug slingers.

The first spot we hit, a marsh, was frozen solid. Then we headed for the Des Moines River. Our first choice of spots was taken so we made do only to be disappointed again. We managed a single red head. Though we did spot loads of ducks flying up the river early in the morning, they never came back. We called it quits early so we could charge up for tomorrow, it sounds like some weather might be coming late in the day. The Vikes don't play till 7:20pm so we're cool. Hopefully I'll have better news tomorrow.

Best mallard day of the season for us in the south zone. Not many ducks seen but best decoying of the season to the ice spread of floaters, shells and and full body ducks and geese. Had two real nice bunches that came in before shooting time, too.

Went out again on Sunday and ended the season with a fizzle, skunked again. Once again the countdown begins until next season, but next spring when the breeding pair counts come out I'll temper any possible joy I might experience with the lessons I learned this season; even if there are more ducks on the face of the planet than at any point in human history, it doesn't mean I'll see any of them. I hope some of you got out for the last few official days of the season, with all this weather finally here I'll bet it's been awesome. Bring on the Timber dwellers.

Boy the Mallards here showed up just in time. Even a few pintail. Everthing moved in Sunday. Lots of ducks today in the snow.
